Clark County Water Reclamation District project to impact traffic near Sam Boyd Stadium during the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl

CATEGORIZED AS: Events , Information , Sports

The Clark County Water Reclamation District (District) will be continuing to repair the collection system on Broadbent Boulevard at Frances Celia Avenue, near Sam Boyd Stadium. Traffic in this area will be impacted through at least the end of the year.

The bypass pumping, that is the cause of traffic impact in this area, works to protect the public and environment from any spills during the critical repair work being done.

Travel advisory for fans attending the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl:

Expect the following traffic impacts on Broadbent Boulevard at Sam Boyd Stadium:

- Prior to the start of the game two lanes will be open traveling into the stadium.
- Once the game has started, lanes will shift so provide two lanes for traffic exiting the stadium.

“We appreciate the patience of the community and of fans attending Saturday’s football game during this project. Rest assured, we are working as quickly as possible to have traffic back to normal in these areas,” said Sam Scire, assistant general manager of the District. “Due to the nature of this work, we are unable to avoid some lane restrictions for events at the stadium this month.”

Scire suggested those attending the Las Vegas Bowl use alternate routes, including Boulder Highway to East Russell Road, which leads directly into the stadium.

For more information and traffic updates, drivers can call the project hotline at 702-853-1333, or visit www.cleanwaterteam.com.

Mosaic Serves Up A Holiday Treat at AMA Agency Crawl

CATEGORIZED AS: Entertainment , Events

The hit a cappella musical group Mosaic highlighted the American Marketing Association Las Vegas' first-ever "Agency Crawl" when it put on an intimate performance at the Las Vegas offices of star7advertising and PR Plus last Thursday.

Mosaic sang a traditional rendition of "Carol of the Bells" before taking things to another level with a modern version of "We Three Kings" that brought down the house.

Mosaic is an instrument-free, all vocals group that blends elements of pop, funk, jazz, hip-hop and opera. The group performs regularly with comedian George Wallace at the Flamingo Las Vegas and was recently crowned MTV’s Top Pop Group.  The six-man vocal collaboration was also the winner of CBS’ “The Early Show” search for The Next Great A Cappella Group.

star7 and PR Plus hosted the first leg of the AMA's inaugural event in order to spread holiday cheer while creating a networking opportunity for AMA members. Longtime collaborators with star7, DAV Productions provided lighting, video and sound support.

"With the premier lights sweeping the sky and all the other great equipment they brought filling the room with sights and sounds, this place felt like a big time event," star7 partner Cary Duckworth said. "Throw Mosaic into the mix, and it was a big time event!"

The Agency Crawl drew about 30 members and guests, and included stops at star7, Sutton Watkins, and Greenspun Media Group.

Christopher Coppola and CSB School of Broadcasting bring free digital media festival to Las Vegas June 6-8, 2008

CATEGORIZED AS: Events

How often do everyday people get to rub shoulders with Hollywood movie producers? And how frequently are we mesmerized by the plight of a regular working person, parent, grandparent or child in American cinema?

Hollywood director and movie producer Christopher Coppola believes that great stories come from everyday people, and that with the advent of digital technology, those stories can be shared globally through the Internet.

This thinking forged a new, Hollywood-based nonprofit organization called PAH Nation. PAH stands for Project Accessible Hollywood. Coppola’s goal, on a smaller scale, is to bring the movie producing tools used in Hollywood to everyday folks around the world, "Bridging the gap between Hollywood and the heartland," he says.

In partnership with CSB School of Broadcasting, Christopher Coppola—filmmaker, nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, brother of Nicolas Cage and renowned “DigiVangelist”—is bringing miniPAH FEST, his groundbreaking digital media festival, to the Las Vegas Valley for the first time, June 6 to 8, 2008.

Don’t Trash Nevada Day on May 31 at Red Spring

CATEGORIZED AS: Events

If you care about our community’s environment and would like to support the Don’t Trash Nevada partnership, you should attend Don’t Trash Nevada Day on May 31 at Red Spring.

The family friendly event goes from 10 a.m. to noon and features local mascots, like Mojave Max, Deputy Drip, Smokey Bear, Cosmo, Summerlin Sam and Star Wars characters in a 10 meter (that’s about 33 feet) “Race for Our Desert.” Now that should be entertaining.

RTC working to make Las Vegas public transportation sexy

CATEGORIZED AS: Events , News

How many of you have lived in Las Vegas for a half-dozen years or so and still haven’t made a trip on a CAT bus?

Those of us accustomed to driving wherever we need to go may be reluctant to do the public transportation thing.

I was quite impressed by a recent presentation from Jacob Snow, general manager of the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), on the many initiatives currently underway to make southern Nevada’s public transportation system more convenient, attractive and accessible.

Club Ride is one of the tools they’re using. As its name implies, it encourages commuters to use alternative transportation like carpools, the bus or bicycling.

And if you’ve hesitated stepping foot on a CAT bus, watch for the new ACE bus which looks totally different and makes just a few stops on the Strip and in downtown, reducing the amount of time it takes to get from point A to point B.

Those of you interested in learning the ABC’s of all things RTC, should plan to attend the RTC Transportation Fair this weekend, May 10-11, 2008. RTC representatives will be on hand at the Boulevard Mall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday to provide details of public transportation in your neighborhood and around the valley.

The following weekend, the RTC Transportation Fair will be at the Galleria at Sunset Mall during the same times.

Aviation Nation air show comes to Nellis Air Force Base to celebrate Air Force’s 60th birthday

CATEGORIZED AS: Events

There was an episode of “The Simpsons” where Sideshow Bob decried the tradition of the air show: “Air show? Buzz-cut Alabamians spewing colored smoke in their whiz-jets to the strains of ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’? What kind of country-fried rube is still impressed by that?”

Yeah, it’s a little harsh and unfair, but it’s also funny. That said, the upcoming Aviation Nation air show sounds pretty awesome.

The Air Force will be celebrating its 60th birthday right here in Las Vegas, Nov. 10-11.

The air show, which will be held Nellis Air Force Base, looks to be the largest free event in Nevada. 150,000 people are expected to turn out to watch the flying demonstrations by civilian and military performers, including the legendary U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds.

Vegoose to rock Las Vegas this weekend

They might not necessarily have as broad of an appeal as some other the other big name acts out there, but those in the know will tell you straight away that they play just good old fashion awesome music.

That’s why I’m excited that they’ll be playing the annual Vegoose Halloween festival this weekend. Vegoose is a weekend long series of outdoor concerts similar to the Coachella festival. The outdoor event will be taking place at Sam Boyd Stadium and Star Nursery Field and will begin Saturday afternoon.

Over two dozen bands are scheduled to attend, including: Muse, Daft Punk, Rage Against the Machine, The Shins, Public Enemy, Ghostface Killah, Cypress Hill and several others.

Chestnut and Kobayashi to meet at the MLE Chowdown: Wedges and Wings in downtown Las Vegas

CATEGORIZED AS: Events

Of all the rivalries in the entire world, one that completely blows me away is that between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi. You may not have ever heard those names before, but the feats these men have accomplished is nigh on legendary.

July 4, 2007. Chestnut took down a world record 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes at the Nathan’s Famous annual hot dog eating contest.

No slouch himself, the previous five-time winner Kobayashi polished off 63 hot dogs, with an injured jaw no less.

This Tuesday, the rivals will meet again at MLE Chowdown: Wedges and Wings at the Freemont Street Experience.

If you’ve never had a shred of interest in bodybuilding, I wouldn’t blame you. Vegas Grand Prix looking for volunteers

CATEGORIZED AS: Events

vegasgrandprix.JPGThe Vegas Grand Prix is coming to our great city April 6-8, 2007. With the money that follows the uber-rich on the Grand Prix Circuit, Las Vegas looks to rake it in, like in Denver where it brought their city millions in non-gaming revenue on its stop in that wonderful city. I would like to be an optimist and say if a city like Denver can get millions for hosting their event, then with all our city has to offer we will easily make a hundred million in “non-gaming” revenue. As not to be left out in the cold, I’m sure the ‘gaming’ section will get its hands on a few more dollars that weekend than her ‘non-gaming’ sister. The uber-rich that follow the Grand Prix circuit will leave piles of cash at every place they stop.

So as not to make everyone think the Vegas Grand Prix is for the uber-rich only, tickets range in cost from $12 (in advance) for Friday to $175 for a 3-day pass with a reserved seat and pit pass. I am not getting on the NASCAR people but they only have to avoid making right hand turns in their style of racing where in the Grand Prix there are 14 different turns (left and right) that these drivers will need to navigate to get a checkered flag.

It is scheduled to be the season opening event for the 2007 Champ Car World Series.
