First Friday celebrates 5th anniversary in downtown Las Vegas
It’s the first Friday of the month tomorrow and that means the First Friday art festival downtown. While each First Friday is a unique event, tomorrow marks the 5th anniversary of the monthly street festival.
The street festival takes place in the 18b Las Vegas Arts District and surrounding neighborhood and gives local artists a venue to display their work. First Friday features over 50 outdoor artists, artisans and entertainers and 80 indoor art, food, drink and shop venues.
I’ve heard people lament about Las Vegas lacking a sense of culture and community, but the First Friday festivals are proof enough that, in fact, they thrive in the city. The festival has grown massive in five years and attracts over 10,000 people each month and is consistently voted as the city’s best art event.
Local bands play throughout the night and children use chalk to strut their own artistic stuff on the street. First Friday not only supports local artists, but has had a tremendous impact on the revitalization of downtown Las Vegas.
It may not match the haughty level of culture you find at the Met in New York, but Hell if it’s not Vegas, through and through.
