Hispanic fury over the Señorita México Las Vegas competition on Dec. 18

If hell has no fury like that of a woman scorned, a corollary would be that the fury of mothers and daughters defrauded in a beauty contest carries formidable impact.

The buzz in the Las Vegas Valley Hispanic community since the Señorita México Las Vegas competition last Dec. 18 in the Stardust Hotel has been about promises made and promises undelivered. Target of the feminine fury is the organizer, one such Adaluz International and its representatives, Jenny Bolívar and Adán Pérez.

Mothers, fathers and sponsors are in the fray; not the least of the latter is the weekly tabloid El Tiempo, a Stephens Media Group Spanish-language entry claiming 10 years of publication. Telemundo Spanish-language TV network and Univisión Radio — with one AM and two FM Las Vegas stations — also were contest sponsors.

Among allegations: Contestants, who paid hefty entry fees, were promised under contract attention from a nutritionist, psychologist, masseuse, gym passes and speech classes, none of which materialized. Contestants waited inside the Stardust beginning at 10 a.m. for access to a suite that never was made available; the evening event resembled a comic opera with contestants rushing outside through a back door in swimsuits and back inside through another door to gain runway access.

A further allegation was that the “Miss State of Mexico” entry wasn’t of Mexican ancestry but rather was born in Long Beach, Calif. of an Argentine father and Costa Rican mother.

Rubén Hofliger, El Tiempo editor, is still gathering information and complaints. He asked in print to be contacted by telephone at 702-477-3846 or by fax at 702-251-0736.
