Las Vegas kiosks for the technology junkie

zoomshop.jpgHere’s a novel idea for you: pick up an iPod, a set of headphones, a pre-paid mobile phone, or even a digital camera at a vending machine.

San Francisco-based Zoom Systems has taken the vending machine concept one step further with its Zoom Shops — 40-square-foot "robotic stores" that carry everything from cosmetics to computer accessories and iPods.

The company has five Zoom Shops in Las Vegas. They’re at the:

  • Atrium Suites

  • Boulevard Mall

  • Fashion Show Mall — home to the company’s newly launched ProActiv Solutions Zoom Shop

  • Las Vegas Hilton

  • World Market Center

Zoom Shops come equipped with graphic touch screens for viewing product information and deliver products to the consumer by way of a robotic arm. They are centrally networked and can update product information, price and stock instantly via the Internet.

This year Zoom Systems expects to open about 3,000 U.S. Zoom Shops and plans to operate 10,000 stores around the globe within the next five years.

Keep your eye out for additional Zoom Shops popping up around tourist-centric Las Vegas.

I actually saw one of these n the Vons at Windmill and Bermuda. I can see them doing huge business in hotels, on (or near) The Las Vegas Strip, and other convention and tourists areas. People on vacation are looking for cool ways to spend money and/or more importantly pick up stuff they need for business when they need it.

Not so sure it will work around the rest of the city for the locals. We have far too many Sav-On and Rite Aid type of stores that now carry even printer ink, digital cameras and similar.
