Shoot…Score… Everyone Wins!

Hockey.jpg On Saturday March 31, the Orleans Casino Arena showcased a charity hockey event to help raise awareness and funds for the Diabetic Life Foundation. This was the second year for the diabetes fundraiser, organized by Bob Maxwell. Before the game fans were treated to an awe inspiring rendition of the National Anthem by a 10 year old phenom that left everyone present speechless.

The game featured past NHL players, local entertainers and a few celebrities in this family styled game. NHL West Versus NHL East and each team had so many players many were forced to stand on the benches for lack of space.

The game started off with a bang. At the drop of the first puck the infamous Hanson Brothers trio Steve and Jeff Hanson and Dave Carlson, famous from their antics in the hockey movie “Slap Shot,” skated down the ice and promptly attacked NHL West goalie Clint Malarchuck, former NHL goal tender for the Buffalo Sabers and the now defunct, Las Vegas Thunder. The three brothers were then escorted to the penalty box.

Goals were plentiful; a total of 25 from both teams, and the fans ate it up. Retired pro players Randy Burridge, Cory Hirsch, JF Jomphe, who now live in Las Vegas all stated that they agreed to play because “it’s such a worthy cause,” and they “like give something back to their fans.” Other notable pro players were Chris and Marty McSorely, Ian Turnbull, “Hot” Rod Buskas, Neil Smith, and Steve Larmer. Former coaches of the Las Vegas Thunder, Bob Bourne and Darren Banks skated to a cheering crowd as well.

During the first period intermission, part time goalie and full time local entertainer Jay White, a Neil Diamond impersonator at the Rio, delighted the crowd with a rendition of “Sweet Caroline.”

To raise money for the cause jerseys and photos were sold. After the game there was an autograph session to let the fans have their newly purchased items signed, and all the money raised says right here in Las Vegas to help our family and friends fight diabetes. Be on the look out for more local events coming up in the near future.
