Welcome to Generous Las Vegas
Las Vegas is internationally recognized for many virtues, but generosity is usually not one of them. This is somewhat unexpected because it is surrounded by relatively benevolent states and cities. Utah, often recognized as the West’s Good Samaritan, has some of the highest volunteer rates in the country. Las Vegas on the other hand is notorious for having some of the lowest volunteer rates in the county.
But lately, this situation has garnered more attention – Nevadans are stepping up, showing that they care and acting on it. With the growth of the city comes a trend of increasing philanthropy and genuine concern for the social health of Las Vegas.
Women’s Philanthropy annual United Luncheon of the UJC Jewish Federation of Las Vegas is an example of Nevada’s swelling heart. In an effort to raise funds for the United Jewish Community’s “dollar-a-day” initiative, this year’s event featured a fashion show with influential members of the Las Vegas community modeling the latest fashions.
The list of ‘models’ included Mayor Oscar Goodman, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Jason Feinberg of Fox 5 News, Elaine Wynn, Susan Molasky and Paul Murad, just to mention a few.
The event, held earlier this month, was extremely successful raising approximately $400,000, with over 400 women attending. The proceeds will be allocated to help struggling families both locally and around the world.
Moving forward, the Jewish Federation is preparing for its next event, the 2007 Champions of Freedom Dinner Gala, which will be held Saturday, March 10, 2007 at the Bellagio.
Events such as this are evidence that Las Vegas is becoming an increasingly benevolent city. As the city develops, the commitment to good causes will also strengthen and expand.
The guest speaker at the event was the best-selling author of Sex and the City, Four Blondes, Trading Up and Lipstick Jungle, Candace Bushnell, pictured here with Paul Murad.
