Homegrown Las Vegas band, The Killers, find success
Mainstream success, it’s what all bands dream of; the desperate clinging to hopes and dreams of a rock star lifestyle. Sadly, few ever make it. And it seems even fewer come from Nevada, breaking out of the proverbial Vegas Valley glass ceiling.
The emerging Vegas music scene (emerging for many, many years) has recently acknowledged a few bands who have managed to gain notoriety in the national and international markets.
The Killers, whose music is played on the radio without fanfare secretes a familiar comforting sound, reminiscent of 80s with undertones of modern Brit rock and a unique lyrical style.
To tell the truth, The Killers snuck up on me. I had heard their music on the radio and MTV Live for some time now and never placed the name with the face. Catchy I thought, but never paid them much attention.
What changed my view and made me more of a fan? A little book called “The Killers: Destiny is calling me,” by Jarret Keene.
Honestly the book was an assignment. Usually I lament assignments. However pouring through this easy to read anthology of their lives took only a matter of a few hours during a couple of days. I will say that biography and historical novels are my genre of choice over fiction and drama.
Jarret’s book chronilizes the band’s formation through trial and error.
Recently their small venue show return to Vegas proved to their hometown fans that they are true to their roots and have finally made it to the top.
Their second album, Sams Town, is a follow-up to Hot Fuss. It’s receiving acclaim from the industry and fans alike. My suggestion: pick it up and listen for yourself.
